The Threshing Barn, Old Alresford

The conversion of a Grade 2 listed thatched barn to a four bedroom house with contemporary interior and purpose built kitchen.

This Grade 2 listed building lay derelict for many years before an adjoining owner purchased it with a view to turn it into a new house for their family, designed to their own requirements.

The planning process took 2 years to complete (undertaken by other architects). A further planning application was made to address specific conservation and design issues. The architects worked closely with the conservation officers to ensure that the work being carried out was sensitively handled. The majority of the original structure has survived, which clearly adds to the character of the finished interiors.

Natural materials have been used throughout and where historic fabric meets contemporary elements, shadow gaps have been introduced to highlight the juxtaposition. Practical additions such as interior rooms, staircases, the kitchen and fireplaces form free standing geometric forms.

The architects worked along with Johnny Grey to design the very special central kitchen that is laid out in a circular form with bespoke units.

A central vacuum system is installed throughout, as is a fully computer controlled lighting and audio system.
