COMMUNITY PROJECTS

The Orchard

A new community facility for voluntary organisations in Basingstoke, constructed in a conservation area.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council commissioned the practice to carry out the Borough’s prestigious millennium project. The practice won the commission on the basis of the design concept.

This is a Landmark building designed to cater for all community care groups and voluntary services and has become a point of healing and care for the community. The building is sited on the edge of Memorial Park near to the Council's own offices.

The architects worked in partnership with the voluntary services and the council to create this building where groups can work together under an environment of sharing and developing facilities together. It is an environmentally friendly building low in energy consumption and fully accessible for disabled people. The council also set aside a budget to allow for their policy of "Percentage for Art" and this was spent by including especially designed coloured glass windows into the atrium. A feeling of openness has been achieved by keeping fire enclosure screens to a minimum made possible by the use of Fire Engineering within the building.
