Link Microtek, Basingstoke

Extension and refurbishment to form new offices and laboratory, Central Basingstoke

Link Microtek are designers and manufacturers of waveguide and coaxial microwave components, and the UKs leading supplier of non-ionising RF safety instrumentation products. The architects were engaged by the contractor to prepare sketches of proposed extensions to their 1950s office building in the centre of Basingstoke and to look at the upgrading of the accommodation of the old block.

The old building was built on ground beams on deep pile foundations due to the extensive fill on the site, so the new extension had to work around the existing wide pile caps. A simple two storey extension of steel frame and concrete floor with an insulated aluminium curtain wall system was used to give a contemporary edge to the building and a new canopy added to give emphasis to the new location of the entrance door. The machine room ceiling was given extra height by stepping down the floor level to the garage level thus giving a lofty workshop space. New offices are provided at first floor level and solar shading is provided by louvers at first floor level. The old building was refurbished with new office spaces, new services, lighting heating etc.

The total new floor area provided is 260 Sq M giving a gross floor area for the complete building of 1200SqM. The building was completed in 2008 and is now in occupation.
